A thoughtful guide for families

You do not need every answer before you begin. A few honest conversations and a consistent way to compare options can make the process more manageable.

1. Put the person at the centre

Discuss what a good day looks like: familiar routines, privacy, friendships, hobbies, food, language and proximity to family. Involve the person moving in the decisions as much as possible.

2. Write down today’s support needs

Consider mobility, meals, personal care, medication, memory and overnight support. Ask a healthcare professional about needs you are unsure how to assess.

3. Work out the full budget

Request a written quote that separates accommodation, care and extras. Ask about deposits, annual increases, notice periods, what happens during a hospital stay, and how higher care needs change the total.

4. Check the setting and its oversight

Use the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority public database to check Ontario retirement-home licensing and available inspection information. For long-term care placement questions, contact Ontario Health atHome.

5. Visit with a consistent checklist

Tour more than one setting where practical. Ask to see the actual suite type, sample meals and activity schedules. Notice accessibility, noise, staff interactions and opportunities to spend time outdoors.

6. Compare, then follow up

Keep notes about what each residence said. Ask for unanswered questions in writing, read agreements carefully, and get independent advice when needed before signing.
